Well,it'snotallthatbad.Iwasadopted.IgrewupinruralUganda,lostbothmyparentswhenIwasvery,veryyoung.Andwhenmyparentspassed,Iexperiencedallthenegativeeffectsofpoverty,fromhomelessness,eatingoutoftrashpiles,younameit.

Thesecondwayinwhichsoundaffectsyouispsychological.Musicisthemostpowerfulformofsoundthatweknowthataffectsouremotionalstate.(Albinoni'sAdagio)ThisisguaranteedtomakemostofyoufeelprettysadifIleaveiton.Musicisnottheonlykindofsound,however,whichaffectsyouremotions.

Naturalsoundcandothattoo.Birdsong,forexample,isasoundwhichmostpeoplefindreassuring.(Birdschirping)Thereisareasonforthat.Overhundredsofthousandsofyearswe'velearnedthatwhenthebirdsaresinging,thingsaresafe.It'swhentheystopyouneedtobeworried.

Letmeexplainwithabitofamateurneuroscience.Yourvisualcortextakesupabout30percentofyourbrain.That'scomparedtoapproximatelyeightpercentfortouchandtwotothreepercentforhearing.Everysecond,youreyescansendyourvisualcortexasmanyastwobillionpiecesofinformation.Therestofyourbodycansendyourbrainonlyanadditionalbillion.Sosightisonethirdofyourbrainbyvolumeandcanclaimabouttwothirdsofyourbrain'sprocessingresources.It'snosurprisethenthattheillusionofsightissocompelling.Butmakenomistakeaboutit:sightisanillusion.
